The National Freelancers Day in Edinburgh. #NFD2014

NFD2014

Yesterday, I had the pleasure to attend to the event of the National Freelancers Day held in Edinburgh. I have to say that I cannot be proud enough to be one of the 4.6 million freelancers in the UK that are pushing its economy onwards.

The event started at 6 o’clock in the area of Fountainbridge, Edinburgh. We had a bit of time to get to know some colleagues and freelancers while having some ‘welcome drinks and canapés’. At 6.45 pm, Colin Miller, IPSE Consultative Council Member, introduced the London event that we were able to see in streaming from Edinburgh.

During the event, a panel of business expert and freelancers talked about the IPSE Manifesto. This Britains’ Secret Weapon is aimed to tackle certain difficulties that the freelancer has to face day by day. Some of these issues are:

  • The recognition of self-employed and freelancers.
  • Fairness of taxation of independent professionals and the regulation of a taxation structure.
  • Regulation of late payments and red tape.
  • How to start out as a self-employed.

Yesterday, we also had the chance to know the new ambassador for self-employment in the UK, David Morris, or the new tsar as he was nicknamed.

We also had the chance to see Marta Stelmaszak on stage as one of the top 15 freelancers in the UK. It was great to have Marta representing freelancer translator and interpreters in the UK in this event. Congratulations!

If you missed the event, don’t you worry, now you can watch the whole session here. You can also read all the tweets posted yesterday regarding the event here.

Also, I would like to thank Free Agent for having hosted such an interesting event in Edinburgh allowing us to support in person the IPSE Manifesto and freelancers all around the UK.

Did you have the chance to attend/watch the event? I want to know your thoughts about it!

My name is David Miralles and I am aware of how languages can influence professional environments. Honing communication between two cultures has become crucial in today’s globalized world. And that is what I do by means of my translation and interpreting services. Small and medium enterprises and individuals can now spread their messages through cultural and linguistic barriers and make a big impact on an international scale.

It was a great evening indeed, David! I was in London and we all agreed that the opportunity to see you all in Manchester and Edinburgh really contributed to the whole event. Great organisation and lots of networking!

Glad to see that you all enjoy the event in London. And, of course, glad to see you on stage! I agree, it was a great evening and a great event.
